It’s an important time of year for students and adults alike. Students are on the verge of finishing their summer exams and we’re all leaving the winter behind (although it doesn’t always feel like it here in the UK!) and heading towards a happy summer. But today I bring a lesson to you all, students or not… don’t dwell, just figure out what’s next.
Steve Jobs once said, “I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell for too long. Just figure out what’s next.” And that message has always stuck with me. Just because the wintry exam season is over, this is not the end until next year, but simply the end of this chapter instead.
Full and half term holidays make a good thing of splitting the chapters of a student’s life up, but many, following events such as their exams go on to dwell and procrastinate for the rest of the year, believing they have done what they’re due. However, this is simply not true.
But it’s not just students either; we all do it, adults, students and children. We dwell and waste weeks and even months of time, not working towards anything new, but instead forever looking back at what we’ve done in the past instead.
Well today, I want you to make a change. It’s a bad habit and nobody, no student finishing their exams, no worker finishing their winters work and looking forward to a pleasant summer should do it. Life’s a journey and what we’ve done is just one chapter, but what you will go on to do next, is the rest.
What’s Next For Me?
So over the last 4 weeks, as have many student’s like me, I’ve been working hard revising and studying for my upcoming economics exams of which I finished my last on Wednesday. However, that was one chapter, my last.
It’s now Saturday and the first day of a week’s half term holiday, but while I presume many if not most other students in the country are playing on their Xbox or online shopping today, with no plans for the final half term and end of the year holiday to come, I’m readying myself for what I believe is going to be the busiest but yet most beneficial chapter of my year yet.
This week’s holiday is a great way for me to end this chapter and to ‘figure out what’s next’. I’ve knew for months what would be coming next and the basic outline has been planned all year, but now it’s time for me to plan in depth and ready myself for the next six week chapter of my life.
Over the next 6 to 8 weeks, I’ll be working with a Print-Media Specialist on my LifeBook idea, wrapping up my Media and Accountancy Courses, completing a work experience at Carillion and moving ever closer towards the next chapter in my journey at the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy next year.
But now, that’s enough about me and my chapters. what about yours?
Now What’s Next For You?
As Steve says, don’t “dwell for too long, just figure out what’s next.” But what is next? Perhaps you’ve come to the end of your miserable winters work and you’re looking for an easy summer away from it. That sounds nice, but why not incorporate a project? Incorporate something to help you grow, a new goal or aim.
Life is a journey full of many but also a limited number chapters which we can fulfil to make us grow. So why waste one and leave it blank? Don’t dwell away this next chapter in your journey, feeling proud of your last, but instead look ahead and figure out what’s next!
What is next? I’d love to know! Let me know in the comments below!
